Ngong Ping Campsite (Ma On Shan)
Ngong Ping Campsite is a designated LCSD camping ground in the Ma On Shan Country Park, sitting on one of Hong Kong's few high grasslands at roughly 400 metres elevation. Getting there means a hike of around 45 minutes from the trailhead, with the reward of open sky and sea views once you arrive, plus barbecue pits and picnic tables at the site itself.
What people praise
- No booking needed, a straightforward hike-in and pitch-anywhere setup
- Genuinely dramatic views for the effort of the walk in
- A well-known launch spot for paragliders, adding scenery even if you're not flying
Worth knowing
- You'll need to carry everything yourself, and water is seasonal only
- Wildlife, including a reported wild boar encounter, means food needs to be stored carefully overnight
Our take: If your trip planning starts with 'I want to hike somewhere and camp', this is the classic Hong Kong answer, and it's the most-reviewed spot here.
