How to read the scorecard

Each card shows the company’s live Google star rating and how many customers have rated it. A confidence score weighs the rating by that volume, so a 4.8 from over a hundred people carries more weight than a 5.0 from a handful. The recency figure reflects how steadily new reviews keep arriving. The figures come straight from Google, and the cards add what customers and each company’s own site say.

What goes into the price of a home security system

The price of a home security system usually has two parts, the equipment and installation up front, and a monthly fee for monitoring. Customers also mention what the monthly fee includes, how many cameras are installed and whether recording runs continuously. One reviewer said a quote beat the other companies they asked. No prices are published here.

Security installers serving San Diego

All of these companies list San Diego addresses: Real Home Security on Aero Dr, Alert 360 on Ruffin Rd, Halcyon Security Solutions on Morena Blvd and Smart Shield Systems on Granite Ridge Dr. Smart Shield’s site says it serves San Diego County. Searching for a home security system near me? Each card has a live phone number so you can confirm your address is covered.

Questions to ask before you sign

  • What does the monthly fee cover, and what does it cost if I cancel early?
  • Do the cameras record continuously or only when they detect motion?
  • Who holds the monitoring contract, and who do I call for service?
  • Is the equipment list itemized on the invoice, and does it match what gets installed?
  • Can you meet my HOA’s rules, and will you train me on the app?

Frequently asked questions

Is an authorized ADT dealer different from a local installer?

Real Home Security is an authorized ADT dealer, so it sells ADT equipment and monitoring. Smart Shield Systems describes itself as a licensed alarm company, and Halcyon Security Solutions as an installer. Ask any company who holds the monitoring contract and who you call for service.

Do San Diego security companies handle businesses as well as homes?

Some do. Halcyon Security Solutions lists residential, commercial and mobile security, Smart Shield Systems covers home and business systems, and Alert 360’s San Diego listing is titled for home and business security.

What should I check about camera recording before I buy?

Ask whether the cameras record continuously or only on motion. One Real Home Security reviewer praised 24/7 recording, so confirm that the cameras in your package offer it.

Can these companies fix or upgrade a system I already have?

Reviewers say yes. A Halcyon Security Solutions customer had an intercom that had been miswired from the start repaired, and an Alert 360 customer had a defective doorbell camera replaced and set up on a phone.

Before you commit

Real Home Security and Alert 360 have the largest review bases, while Halcyon Security Solutions and Smart Shield Systems post high ratings on slightly smaller ones. Pick based on whether you want an ADT-branded plan, app-based control or help with a system you already own, and read the contract and equipment list before signing.
